The beer selection is good and the staff is very nice and accommodating... Ham, turkey, bacon, lettuce, tomato, onions, and mayo served on a texas toast. Very good service, good beer and fantastic food. Roast beef, swiss, creamy horseradish & Au jus dipping sauce on toasted ciabatta.

I asked if they had a beer menu, she just simply said no and turned to the other customer who entered after I did. She served the customer all the way and even chit chat a little then finally came to me again. I asked again for the beer menu 'cause I wasn't sure if I heard her right first time. I had to ask her again what beer can I have, she just pointed drafts and refrigerator and said those are their beers. I don't know if she was upset because I literally entered at the opening time but it was so bad so I just left.

More severe weather expected in central U S. this week

charlotte weather radar hourly

East Charlotte has historically struggled with upward mobility. While this incident is isolated, recent crime has caught people's attention. Monday's tragedy happened just more than 17 years after two Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department officers died in the line of duty. The March 31, 2007 shooting claimed the lives of officers Jeff Shelton and Sean Clark while they tried to respond to a domestic disturbance at an apartment complex.

ABOUT THIS FORECAST

The vigil comes on the heels of the deadly shootout between law enforcement officers and a man they were trying to arrest. Four officers were killed in an exchange of gunfire with the suspect and four others were wounded. The suspect, who was being served a warrant for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, was also killed. We recognize our responsibility to use data and technology for good. We may use or share your data with our data vendors.

HOURLY FORECAST

(WBTV) - A neighbor said dozens of law enforcement officers used his home and backyard in a shootout that happened Monday afternoon in an east Charlotte neighborhood. Charlotte gets some kind of precipitation, on average, 105 days per year. Precipitation is rain, snow, sleet, or hail that falls to the ground. In order for precipitation to be counted you have to get at least .01 inches on the ground to measure. The swath of severe weather at risk Wednesday will be nearly identical to that of Tuesday and will extend from Nebraska and Iowa southward 900 miles to near the Big Bend area of the Rio Grande River in Texas.

Thursday morning forecast with Meteorologist Keith Monday

Storms and the setup that are potent enough to produce tornadoes will also bring many incidents of large hail, high winds and torrential downpours. The downpours will also bring the risk of flash flooding to some areas that were spared in recent days. "The overall coverage of severe weather on Thursday may be more localized when compared to Tuesday and Wednesday, as well as that of this past Friday and Saturday," AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Matt Benz said. The storms are likely to produce episodes of hail and strong winds. Charlotte, North Carolina gets 43 inches of rain, on average, per year.

Officers ordered Wilson and two others in the home to hide in a back room as the gunfire was ongoing. At around 4 p.m., Wilson said it had been largely quiet for the past hour. At quarter of 5 p.m., however, Wilson said he heard additional shots and officers walking around in his backyard. Wilson described the scene as “gunfire galore,” with officers army-crawling through his backyard, hiding behind trees, and jumping around bushes.

Hour-by-Hour Forecast for Charlotte, North Carolina, USA

Along with the tornado threat, storms will pack high winds, large hail, and torrential rain that can aggravate or initiate flooding problems. Live on WBTV, Tyler Wilson described officers streaming into his home, including one officer Wilson said appeared to be a sniper using his window during an active shootout Monday afternoon. His backyard is adjacent to the backyard of the one involved in the incident, Wilson said.

That complex was located about a mile from where Monday's shooting unfolded. — As east Charlotte continues to reckon with Monday's deadly shooting along Galway Avenue, three community groups offered a chance for neighbors to join together with a prayer vigil. Customize, add layers and zoom in & out your animated radar with our interactive radar map.

Please select the information that is incorrect. On average, there are 218 sunny days per year in Charlotte. Small streams and rivers surged to moderate to major flood stage as a result of rounds of heavy rain in recent days. The rainfall will result in the middle segment of the Mississippi River, reaching a minor flood stage in some areas. "Two more storm systems will affect the Central states this week," AccuWeather Chief On-Air Meteorologist Bernie Rayno said.

Detailed Forecast

The atmosphere was reloading Monday as the last gasp of thunderstorms pushed along the central Gulf Coast region with flooding downpours and gusty winds. Since Sunday, the group of storms has been responsible for 4-10 inches of rain and flash flooding in parts of Texas and Louisiana. Sadly, several people were killed, including an infant, in the violent storms and tornadoes from Friday to Sunday. Close to 1,000 incidents of severe weather occurred, including more than 125 tornadoes. Severe weather and the likelihood of more tornadoes will return to the central United States, spanning Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, AccuWeather meteorologists warn.

Many people confuse weather and climate but they are different. Weather is the conditions of the atmosphere over a short period of time, and climate is how the atmosphere is over long periods of time. Wilson said the people who lived in the home involved in the incident had lived there for “a year and change” but otherwise didn’t know them. They occasionally had backyard parties, Wilson said. You are about to report this weather station for bad data.

"We could be looking at more than a dozen tornadoes Wednesday in portions of the central and southern Plains," Rayno said. The second of the two main storms this week will eject from the central Rockies Wednesday and is forecast to pivot more slowly northward over the northern Plains and Upper Midwest Thursday. The Current Radar map shows areas of current precipitation (rain, mixed, or snow). The map can be animated to show the previous one hour of radar. Weather is how the atmosphere is behaving and its effects upon life and human activities. Most people think of weather in terms of temperature, humidity, precipitation, cloudiness, brightness, visibility, wind, and atmospheric pressure.

The overall threat of severe weather Tuesday afternoon and evening will extend as far to the south as west-central Texas. "This storm will bring a reprise of severe weather, mainly in the form of high winds and hail, but also the potential for tornadoes in eastern Nebraska and western Iowa on Tuesday afternoon and evening," Rayno said. Omaha, Nebraska, may be in the middle of the threat zone. Many of the same areas that were rocked and devastated by severe weather and flash flooding in recent days may be hit again or at least under the threat of severe weather, including tornadoes. The threat of severe weather will continue from the second storm system Thursday. The threat zone will encompass much of the same areas as Tuesday and Wednesday but also extend farther to the east -- near the Mississippi River and east of the Mississippi in Illinois and Wisconsin.

Charlotte Tilbury Hollywood Flawless Filter ingredients Explained

Fortunately, other products will make your skin look glowing without the shiny finish. The best product dupe for Charlotte Tilbury’s Flawless Filter is the Maybelline Master Chrome Jelly Highlighter. Since it has a jelly texture, it blends well with foundation and doesn’t leave your skin feeling tacky. If this dupe doesn’t work for you, I mentioned several others in liquid and powder formulas that can be used as a primer, foundation, or highlighter. This is called a glow booster, meant to either be worn alone or mixed with foundation.

It worked as well over bare skin as it did blended on top of foundation for me. On its own, it lasted well for nine hours with minimal fading and no migration as a cheek highlighter. My initial confusion about the product turned out to be warranted. The formula can be used as a (tinted) primer, mixed with foundation for a glowy finish, or used as a subtle liquid highlighter on the face (under or on top of foundation).

When I first started wearing makeup, I turned to Neutrogena for its makeup-meets-skincare approach. After all these years, not much has changed, and we can take this primer as an example. Most people recommend e.l.f. Halo Glow Liquid Filter as a dupe for Charlotte Tilbury Flawless Filter.

Ingredient List

It also protects the skin and strengthens the skin barrier function. Your skin will not only look glowing but will feel soft all day. As a standalone highlighter, it gave me a lit-from-within-glow that was luminous but not tacky or truly glossy, just looked dewy on my skin.

To be honest, I didn’t really care enough at the time to investigate. After watching about five or six TikTok videos demonstrating how to actually use the Hollywood Flawless Filter, I was S-O-L-D. A helper ingredient that helps to neutralize the metal ions in the formula (they usually come from water) so it stays nice longer. The special property of this particular ingredient is that it's more effective against more problematic ions, like Cu (copper) and Fe (iron) compared to less problematic ones like Ca (calcium)  and Mg (magnesium). It’s a handy multi-tasking ingredient that gives the skin a nice, soft feel. At the same time, it also boosts the effectiveness of other preservatives, such as the nowadays super commonly used phenoxyethanol.

I think e.l.f.’s Liquid Filter has more of a creamy texture than Flawless Filter, which to me feels more liquidy. I also love how Liquid Filter contains more hydrating ingredients. Of course, I only mentioned a dupe if it offers comparable results to Flawless Filter. Flawless Filter not only offers a beautiful glow but blurs imperfections. Looking at the ingredients, mica is one of the first that’s mentioned.

Question: Should I choose a luminizing primer or a highlighter?

It offers blurring benefits more than coverage, so it’s perfect for those who only want a glowing effect without spending tons of money on Flawless Filter. Flawless Filter has moisturizing ingredients, perfect for those with dry skin. But if you have oily/combination skin, Flawless Filter and its dupes may make your skin look too shiny.

For example, it’s made with more hydrating ingredients than Flawless Filter, such as hyaluronic acid and squalane. For example, illuminators with oil can breakout skin and cause shininess, especially for those with oily/combination skin. If you want to use Flawless Filter to give your skin a lovely glow, you can use an illuminator. Of course, there are similar foundation boosters out there if you want a glowing product to mix with your foundation. If you have dry skin, Flawless Filter offers some skincare benefits. Charlotte Tilbury promises it’s moisturizing, though doesn’t mention specific ingredients. When you mix Charlotte Tilbury’s Flawless Filter with any foundation, your skin will have the social media-perfect glow–as if you’re wearing a filter IRL.

It can be used as a primer, all over base like foundation (if you like light coverage) or a highlighter. Propanediol helps absorb ingredients into your skin, boosting their benefits. Propanediol can help products last longer by boosting the properties of preservatives within the formulation.

Like Flawless Filter, Glowy Super Gel can also be used as a primer or illuminator, so it’s the perfect multi-purpose product if you want healthy, glowing skin. Worn alone on bare skin, it’s perfect for a no-makeup makeup look. Even though the formula is pretty sheer, it’ll add the fresh radiance we’re all after—while looking like you have nothing on. I applied it evenly all over the face with my fingers for the subtle, youthful-looking glow we all wish we woke up with, but you could also use a brush or damp sponge. These 112 House Republicans Voted Against Ukraine Aid

Cabinet officers and other officials are frequently summoned before the committees to explain policy. The Constitution (Article I, section 6) prohibits members of Congress from holding offices in the executive branch of government—a chief distinction between parliamentary and congressional forms of government. It has meant that once a decade, states have had to face the prospect of joining a list of winners and losers after those House seats are reshuffled based on how the states' latest census population counts rank. How those seats are reassigned also plays a key role in presidential elections. Each state's share of Electoral College votes is determined by adding its number of House seats to its two Senate seats.

Votes on the Foreign Aid Bills

One example of a provision repeatedly supported by the House but blocked by the Senate was the Wilmot Proviso, which sought to ban slavery in the land gained during the Mexican–American War. Conflict over slavery and other issues persisted until the Civil War (1861–1865), which began soon after several southern states attempted to secede from the Union. The war culminated in the South's defeat and in the abolition of slavery. All southern senators except Andrew Johnson resigned their seats at the beginning of the war, and therefore the Senate did not hold the balance of power between North and South during the war. Holding the votes was an act of defiance by Johnson against an outspoken faction of conservative rebels who oppose funding for Ukraine and pushed him not to bring it to a vote.

More House History

Immediately after the bill passed, ZelenskIy released a statement expressing his gratitude to both parties “and personally Speaker Mike Johnson for the decision that keeps history on the right track”. As a result of his move, Johnson could face a vote on his ouster in the coming weeks. The GOP speaker, however, has grown more willing to confront the threat from the right, and Democrats have suggested that they're willing to protect him from an ouster effort if he allowed a vote on Ukraine aid. In the two years since Russia's invasion, opposition to aiding Ukraine has grown from a fringe position to a majority view among House GOP lawmakers. Many argue the money should be spent domestically or that policy changes at the US-Mexico border should take precedence.

Checks and Balances in Congress

The number of voting representatives in the House is fixed by law at no more than 435, proportionally representing the population of the 50 states. Currently, there are five delegates representing the District of Columbia, the Virgin Islands, Guam, American Samoa, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. In most states, major party candidates for each district are nominated in partisan primary elections, typically held in spring to late summer. Exceptions can result in so-called floor fights—convention votes by delegates, with outcomes that can be hard to predict. Especially if a convention is closely divided, a losing candidate may contend further by meeting the conditions for a primary election. The courts generally do not consider ballot access rules for independent and third party candidates to be additional qualifications for holding office and no federal statutes regulate ballot access.

Government Oversight

The Israel bill includes about $4.4bn to replenish depleted US supplies given to Israel; $4bn for missile defense, including the much-vaunted Iron Dome, and $1.2bn for the Iron Beam; and $3.5bn to help Israel buy weapons. There are also provisions to make it easier to supply Israel with US munitions held in other countries. Voting began hours ahead of schedule in an extraordinary Saturday session that delayed the House’s planned recess. The House erupted into applause when the Ukraine bill passed, with the chair, Marc Molinaro of New York, admonishing members not to wave Ukrainian flags.

Representatives by Party

The allocation of seats is based on the population within the states, and membership is reapportioned every 10 years, following the decennial census. House members are elected for two-year terms from single-member districts of approximately equal population. Whether working on Capitol Hill or in his / her congressional district, a representative’s schedule is extremely busy. Often beginning early in the morning with topical briefings, most representatives move quickly among caucus and committee meetings and hearings. They vote on bills, speak with constituents and other groups, and review constituent mail, press clips and various reports.

House were held on November 3, 2020, and coincide with the 2020 presidential election. Special elections will be held during the 118th Congress to replace members of Congress who leave office for any reason. During debates, a member may speak only if called upon by the presiding officer.

From "How much does the president make?" to "How many amendments are there?" to "What is an oligarchy?" – we're striving to find answers to the most common questions you ask every day. The Vice President of the United States serves as President of the Senate and may cast the decisive vote in the event of a tie in the Senate. HISTORY.com works with a wide range of writers and editors to create accurate and informative content.

Work can continue into the evening with receptions or fundraising events. Before members are assigned to committees, each committee’s size and the proportion of Republicans to Democrats must be decided by the party leaders. The total number of committee slots allotted to each party is approximately the same as the ratio between majority party and minority party members in the full chamber. The House also has one permanent committee that is not a standing committee, the Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, and occasionally may establish temporary or advisory committees, such as the Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming.

If they do, the bill does not become law unless each House, by a two-thirds vote, votes to override the veto. The approval of the Senate and the House of Representatives is required for a bill to become law. Both Houses must pass the same version of the bill; if there are differences, they may be resolved by a conference committee, which includes members of both bodies. For the stages through which bills pass in the Senate, see Act of Congress.

The number of seats in the House was expanded to 105 members after the 1790 Census, and then to 142 members after the 1800 headcount. The law that set the current number of seats at 435 took effect in 1913. But it isn't the reason the number of representatives has been stuck there. Still, Anderson, the census historian, says she's concerned about how representative the House actually is at this unchanging size. A century ago, there was one member for about every 200,000 people, and today, there's one for about every 700,000. While those kinds of arguments against making the House bigger were not new, they won out in 1929, when Congress passed the law that set up an automatic process for reapportioning the House based on the existing number of seats.

The House has several powers assigned exclusively to it, including the power to initiate revenue bills, impeach federal officials, and elect the President in the case of an Electoral College tie. Usually, these committees will make recommended changes to these pieces of legislation, before voting on whether or not to forward them to the entire House of Representatives or Senate for a vote. Interestingly, although the Senate is sometimes referred to as the “upper body,” and the House as the “lower body,” the two legislative bodies hold the same amount of power within the U.S. system. Both must agree to, vote on and adopt pieces of identical legislation (known as bills) in order for the legislation to become law. The number rose following the ratification of the Constitution by North Carolina and Rhode Island in 1790; the first Congress (1789–91) adjourned with 65 representatives.

This latter committee, created in the 110th Congress and reauthorized for the 111th, has no jurisdiction over legislation and must be chartered anew at the start of every Congress. The House also appoints members to serve on joint committees, which include members of the Senate and House. Some joint committees oversee independent government bodies; for instance, the Joint Committee on the Library oversees the Library of Congress. Other joint committees serve to make advisory reports; for example, there exists a Joint Committee on Taxation. Hence, the power of joint committees is considerably lower than those of standing committees. The House is also served by several officials who are not members.

how many in house of representatives

When the presidency and Senate are controlled by a different party from the one controlling the House, the speaker can become the de facto "leader of the opposition". Some notable examples include Tip O'Neill in the 1980s, Newt Gingrich in the 1990s, John Boehner in the early 2010s, and Nancy Pelosi in the late 2000s and again in the late 2010s and early 2020s. Since the speaker is a partisan officer with substantial power to control the business of the House, the position is often used for partisan advantage. After the whips, the next ranking official in the House party's leadership is the party conference chair (styled as the Republican conference chair and Democratic caucus chair). Representatives and delegates serve for two-year terms, while a resident commissioner (a kind of delegate) serves for four years. The U.S. Constitution requires that vacancies in the House be filled with a special election.

The whip’s official role is to count potential votes for bills being debated for the party leaders. The House Majority Leader—who is also chosen from among the membership of the political party with the most seats in the House—schedules time for floor debate on legislation and sets the legislative strategy for the party in control. In the House of Representatives, the legislative schedule (which defines when bills are debated and voted upon) is set by the body’s leader, known as the Speaker of the House. The Speaker, who is chosen among the membership of the political party with the most seats in the House, establishes the legislative priorities for the body and presides over the deliberation of bills under consideration. The United States is also divided into 435 congressional districts with a population of about 760,000 each.

The opposition to the Israel aid represented a minority of Democrats, but reflected the deep resistance to unconditional aid and the divisions in the party on Gaza. Representative Jamie Raskin of Maryland represented a notable new “no” vote among Democrats, and other standouts included Representatives Donald S. Beyer Jr. of Virginia, Earl Blumenauer of Oregon and John Garamendi of California. Both chambers of Congress have extensive investigative powers, and may compel the production of evidence or testimony toward whatever end they deem necessary. Members of Congress spend much of their time holding hearings and investigations in committee. Refusal to cooperate with a congressional subpoena can result in charges of contempt of Congress, which could result in a prison term.

House of Representatives Definition, History, & Facts

how many in house of representatives

The Permanent Apportionment Act of 1929 was the result of a battle between rural and urban areas of the United States following the 1920 Census. The formula for distributing seats in the House based on population favored "urbanized states" and penalized smaller rural states at the time, and Congress could not agree on a reapportionment plan. That growth plateaued after the 1920 census, when Congress, for the first time in history, did not pass a new law about how to use the results of the latest national tally to reshape the House. The Committee on Ethics has jurisdiction over the rules and statutes governing the conduct of members, officers and employees while performing their official duties. The Committee of the Whole House is a committee of the House on which all representatives serve and which meets in the House Chamber for the consideration of measures from the Union calendar.

The House also has the power to formally censure or reprimand its members; censure or reprimand of a member requires only a simple majority, and does not remove that member from office. Speaking from the Capitol earlier this week, Johnson said providing aid to Ukraine was “critically important” and “the right thing” despite the potential power of his opponents to bring him down in yet another internal party coup. Last month, Greene unveiled a motion to remove Johnson as speaker, although she has not yet moved to force a vote on the matter. In the past week, two more House Republicans – Thomas Massie of Kentucky and Paul Gosar of Arizona – have signed on as co-sponsors.

There are approximately 20 standing (permanent) committees, organized mainly around major policy areas, each having staffs, budgets, and subcommittees. They may hold hearings on questions of public interest, propose legislation that has not been formally introduced as a bill or resolution, and conduct investigations. Among important standing committees are those on appropriations, on ways and means (which handles matters related to finance), and on rules. There are also select and special committees, which are usually appointed for a specific project and for a limited period.

Today, the GAO audits and generates reports on every aspect of the government, ensuring that taxpayer dollars are spent with the effectiveness and efficiency that the American people deserve. After being introduced, a bill is referred to the appropriate committee for review. There are 17 Senate committees, with 70 subcommittees, and 23 House committees, with 104 subcommittees.

Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., refused to bring that bill to the floor, instead opting to pass three separate bills with aid for the three nations. WASHINGTON — The House on Saturday passed a $95 billion package that includes two long-awaited bills with $60.8 billion of aid for Ukraine and $26 billion in aid for Israel and relief for Gaza. Rep. Bob Good, R-Va., spoke to reporters on Capitol Hill following a foreign aid bill vote on April 19. He said he doesn't support the motion to vacate House Speaker Johnson. "Our process, in the end, ensured that each member was able to consider the individual supplemental elements on their own merits, which is exactly how the House is supposed to work," Johnson said after the vote on Saturday afternoon. "I know there are critics of the legislation. I understand that — it is not a perfect piece of legislation. We're not ensured that in a time of divided government."

The package contains a fourth bill aimed at implementing sanctions and policies to counter China, Iran and Russia. It also includes a version of a House bill that passed overwhelmingly in March that forces TikTok to divest from its Chinese parent company or face a ban in the U.S. Simply getting the bills to a vote on the foor required Johnson to seek help from Democrats across the aisle. A procedural vote to get it to the floor was , with 165 Democrats and 151 Republicans supporting the motion.

In the Senate, debate on most bills is unlimited — Senators may speak to issues other than the bill under consideration during their speeches, and any amendment can be introduced. Senators can use this to filibuster bills under consideration, a procedure by which a Senator delays a vote on a bill — and by extension its passage — by refusing to stand down. A supermajority of 60 Senators can break a filibuster by invoking cloture, or the cession of debate on the bill, and forcing a vote. Once debate is over, the votes of a simple majority pass the bill. In order to pass legislation and send it to the President for his or her signature, both the House and the Senate must pass the same bill by majority vote. If the President vetoes a bill, they may override his veto by passing the bill again in each chamber with at least two-thirds of each body voting in favor.

This has been a federal statutory requirement since 1967 pursuant to the act titled An Act For the relief of Doctor Ricardo Vallejo Samala and to provide for congressional redistricting.[18] Before that law, general ticket representation was used by some states. An earlier version of this article incorrectly identified the political party of a group of representatives who notably voted “no” on new aid for Israel. The committees also play an important role in the control exercised by Congress over governmental agencies.

The United States is divided into 435 congressional districts, each with a population of about 710,000 individuals. Each district elects a representative to the House of Representatives for a two-year term. Americans in the United States’s six territories are represented in the House of Representatives by an additional six non-voting delegates. The Constitution provides that the House may choose its own speaker.[50] Although not explicitly required by the Constitution, every speaker has been a member of the House. The Constitution does not specify the duties and powers of the speaker, which are instead regulated by the rules and customs of the House.

For most of the House's history, however, states did not lose representation after the national head count's results were released. Generally speaking, as the country's census numbers grew, so did the size of the House since it was first established at 65 seats by the Constitution before the first U.S. count in 1790. The House’s standing committees have different legislative jurisdictions. Each considers bills and issues and recommends measures for consideration by the House. Committees also have oversight responsibilities to monitor agencies, programs, and activities within their jurisdictions, and in some cases in areas that cut across committee jurisdictions.

While their role has fluctuated over the years, today they have many of the same privileges as voting members, have a voice in committees, and can introduce bills on the floor, but cannot vote on the ultimate passage of bills. Presently, the District of Columbia and the five inhabited U.S. territories each elect a delegate. A seventh delegate, representing the Cherokee Nation, has been formally proposed but has not yet been seated.[30] An eighth delegate, representing the Choctaw Nation is guaranteed by treaty but has not yet been proposed. Additionally, some territories may choose to also elect shadow representatives, though these are not official members of the House and are separate individuals from their official delegates. The House of Representatives has voted to pass a $95 billion foreign aid package that includes funding to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan. The House passed a long-stalled foreign aid package on Saturday that gives funding to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan, with a majority of lawmakers backing money for American allies across the globe.

Under the Articles of Confederation, the Congress of the Confederation was a unicameral body with equal representation for each state, any of which could veto most actions. Each portion of the package — which was broken down into separate bills — received bipartisan support. A majority of Republican members — 112 — voted against aid to Ukraine, with one member voting "present." Thirty-seven Democrats voted against aid to Israel. Congress, as one of the three coequal branches of government, is ascribed significant powers by the Constitution. All legislative power in the government is vested in Congress, meaning that it is the only part of the government that can make new laws or change existing laws. Executive Branch agencies issue regulations with the full force of law, but these are only under the authority of laws enacted by Congress.

The presiding officer is the Speaker of the House, who is elected by the members thereof. Other floor leaders are chosen by the Democratic Caucus or the Republican Conference, depending on whichever party has more voting members. The chairs of House committees, particularly influential standing committees such as Appropriations, Ways and Means, and Rules, are powerful but not officially part of the House leadership hierarchy. Until the post of majority leader was created, the chair of Ways and Means was the de facto majority leader. Historically, many territories have sent non-voting delegates to the House.

A visit to the Baranof Castle State Historic Site is an option for spending the day in Sitka, which was where the formal transfer ceremony of Alaska from Russia to the United States took place. Strolling along the forest at the Sitka National Historical Park is a popular activity, too, which preserves the site of a battle between the Tlingit people and Russian traders. An Alaska cruise will take you on a journey to visit some of the most magnificent natural beauty and local culture you'll find anywhere in the world.

ADVENTURE ON THE WILD SIDE

Smaller ships tend to sail from Vancouver whereas larger ships sail out of Seattle. This is due to the fact that Quantum Class ships are unable to fit under Vancouver’s Lion Gate Bridge outside of a very low-tide. Therefore, ships like Radiance of the Seas, Serenade of the Seas, and Brilliance of the Seas sail out of Vancouver instead. Deciding whether to start your cruise in Seattle, Vancouver, or Seward is one of the first decisions you make when planning an Alaska cruise. There’s also the opportunity to spot harbor seals, wolves, brown bears, and other wildlife that call these areas home.

Royal Caribbean sends 4-5 cruise ships to Alaska each summer, with each ship offering a different layout, amenities, dining options, entertainment, and stateroom options. Some of Royal Caribbean’s smallest and largest cruise ships sail to Alaska, so it’s important to consider which ship works best for you before booking an Alaska cruise. In addition to port stops—where guests disembark the ship—most itineraries include a scenic viewing day of a glacier. During these visits, your cruise ship will sail into a fjord and stop within sight of one of Alaska’s magnificent glaciers, such as Hubbard Glacier or Dawes Glacier.

With western-themed architecture and eclectic decor, The Red Dog Saloon is certainly unique. It’s not uncommon for the saloon to be filled with cruisers enjoying live music, drinks, and food before getting back onboard the ship. On the first day or two of your cruise, we recommend exploring the ship to make note of areas from which you can view the scenery once you get to Alaska. The pool deck is a popular option, but you may find some hidden gems throughout the ship. A unique aspect to an Alaska cruise is that you can see land for the majority of the sailing. They mainly sail through Alaska’s inside passage, where fjords, waterfalls, and mountains dot the landscape on both sides of the ship.

Cruises leaving Vancouver do not need to stop in Victoria, meaning your cruise itinerary will visit more ports in Alaska compared to those leaving Seattle. All Alaska cruises departing Seattle must include a port stop in Victoria, British Columbia to meet the requirements of the Passenger Vessel Services Act (PVSA). There’s no right or wrong itinerary to book for Alaska, but it’s important to know what to expect in each port before booking one cruise over the other.

Disadvantages of a one-way Alaska cruise

Other times, you might prefer to take advantage of the thrilling adventures an area has to offer. Doing research will help you pack correctly, plan your travel logistics without any issues, and book that once-in-a-lifetime excursion you’ve dreamed about for years. In Alaska, on the other hand, you will want to lower your expectations when it comes to weather.

On northbound cruises, you'll get the best views of the glaciers on the starboard side of the ship; when you're sailing southward, the port side is the way to go. Nothing compares to glacier cruises on Radiance of the Seas and Brilliance of the Seas . Go all out on CruiseTours that take you deeper into the Last Frontier, with excursions into the wilds of Denali National Park, train rides with sweeping views of Alaska’s rugged interior, and more.

You can still have an amazing Alaska cruise by depending on public areas to enjoy the view. Royal Caribbean's ships feature ample deck space to enjoy the view any time of the day. Moreover, the price of a balcony room may be much more expensive than an interior room. You may decide that it is a better investment to book the cheaper room and use the money saved to invest in an amazing shore excursion. If so, selecting a larger ship like Quantum of the Seas or Ovation of the Seas may be the best option. These Quantum Class ships feature the Seaplex, an indoor sports court that offers activities like bumper cars, soccer, pickleball, and more.

If relaxing is more your style, you’ll find the indoor Solarium or Two70 entertainment venue to be the perfect spaces to kick back with a view. Nothing back there to placate the masses longing for an affordable balcony overlooking the wake of the ship. That's in addition to the shallow pools and hot tubs in the adults-only, forward-facing Solarium with its incredible ocean views. A bit of research and preparation will get you far when deciding what to bring on an Alaska cruise.

Or, if in Ketchikan, put on your hiking points and summit Deer Mountain for unbeatable views of the nearby islands. The best way to see Alaska’s cruise ports on a budget is to explore on your own instead of booking a tour. Many cruisers to Alaska dream of seeing the northern lights while visiting the state, but the northern lights viewing season does not coordinate well with the summer cruise season.

Glaciers can put on quite a show as they shed massive chunks of ice (a process called calving), splashing into the water below. A cruise to Alaska is also a great opportunity to see the region's abundant wildlife, including many marine animals, such as whales, sea lions, and otters. As one of the largest cruise lines in the world, Royal Caribbean offers cruisers great value, with tons of amenities and activities onboard. The cruise line pushes the envelope with industry-leading advancements and ships that are designed to sail in cooler climates, making for the ultimate Alaska cruise vacation. Royal Caribbean offers two quite different classes of ships sailing a variety of itineraries in Alaska. There are also slight differences between the individual ships themselves, even within the same class.

Daylight hours will increase each day leading up to the summer solstice, with daylight hours from 4AM to 10PM in late May. Sailing from Seattle will likely offer an Alaska cruise vacation on Royal Caribbean's big ships and is your best bet for someone new to the itinerary. Only select cruise lines, including Princess Cruises and Holland America, can visit Glacier Bay. The national park issues permits to cruise lines, and Royal Caribbean does not currently have a permit.

Arriving one day ahead of time and staying in a hotel the night before your cruise will give you buffer time in the chance you encounter unexpected delays. During these months, you may find fewer families and passengers onboard and lower prices. In addition, you may have a greater chance of seeing the northern lights as fall begins in September. If you’re on a one-way itinerary, it’s possible to encounter inclement weather while sailing through the Gulf of Alaska to (or from) Seward.

Canada does not permit entry to any visitors with criminal records, regardless of how long ago the crime occurred. As soon as your ship leaves port and enters international waters, the casino will open. Our local Alaska expert Mollie wrote a great piece about where to eat like a local on your Alaska cruise.
